Which characteristics make MBR system wastewater treatment the best choice?


Access to clean water will be limited in the future. So, there is a need to clean wastewater which is discharged from industrial and municipal plants. Here, MBR system wastewater treatment can benefit a lot as it is an advanced technology that helps remove biological and chemical contaminants from wastewater. The sources of clean drinking water are becoming limited that’s why an increasing quality and quantity of water will be needed to support and maintain the rising population. Ultrafiltration membrane system is considered the best wastewater treatment system to make possible the reuse of wastewater.


The reuse and recycling of wastewater can be useful in increasing the quality and quantity of water. The latest advancement in membrane technology has made possible the reuse of wastewater. Effluent from MBR system wastewater treatment is capable of meeting or exceeding the current regulations of drinking water. In the U.S., recycled wastewater is used for irrigation and not for drinking water. In countries like Singapore, treated wastewater is also used for drinking purpose in addition to irrigation. The costs of the ultrafiltration membrane system have been decreased in the past few years and thus MBR system wastewater treatment is considered the best for wastewater treatment projects. MBR system provides the advantages of biological and chemical treatment. In comparison to traditional wastewater treatment processes, membrane bioreactors provide better quality effluent.


Characteristics of MBR system wastewater treatment
The popularity of the MBR system has increased to a greater extent in the past 10 years. This wastewater treatment is an economical option compared to other treatment processes.


• Filtration processes
Nowadays, six membrane bioreactors are used for wastewater treatment i.e. microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, and dialyses. The wastewater treatment processes are classified on the basis of membrane separation mechanism and size, membrane configuration and material, and the type of separation driving forces. The pore size of microfiltration ranges between 0.1-0.2 µm, 0.002-0.1 µm for ultrafiltration, and 0.0001-0.001 µm for nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. These four types of membranes depend on hydraulic pressure differences for driving the separation process. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration membrane system are the widely used MBR system wastewater treatments. UF is capable of removing virus whereas MF removes bacteria, turbidity, and protozoa.


• Membrane materials
Membranes are manufactured with either ceramic materials or organic polymers. The polymer-made membranes provide the benefit of low-cost production but are prone to degradation and fouling. On the other hand, ceramic membranes provide durability and excellent quality but are expensive for big scale operations.


• Membrane configuration
The flow of wastewater can be either dead-end or cross flow inside a membrane system. Wastewater flow is similar to membrane surface and assists to decrease fouling. With dead-end flow, wastewater flows perpendicular to membrane. MBR system wastewater treatment uses cross flow because of its several advantages.
